The Americas Research Network (ARENET), in collaboration with the Secretariat of Culture of Puebla, the Municipal Institute of Art and Culture of Puebla (IMACP), the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Puebla, the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE), the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP), and various institutions and embassies, proudly presents the first edition of “Originaria: International Film Showcase.” This event aims to highlight cinematic works that reflect the stories, realities, and struggles of Indigenous peoples.
The showcase will take place from December 6 to 8, 2024, at three prominent venues in Puebla City: the Luis Buñuel Cinematheque, the Municipal Theater, and the Puebla Zócalo. The event is free and open to the public, offering an accessible platform to enjoy the diverse cinematic proposals featured in the program.
This edition will present fourteen works from fourteen cultures, including feature films, short films, and documentaries. These productions address key themes such as the effects of climate change on Indigenous communities, the preservation of their territories and natural resources, the defense of their sacred sites, and the conservation of their languages and cultures in a changing world.
“Originaria” seeks to raise awareness about the importance of Indigenous cultures in protecting the environment and the cultural richness they represent. The showcase is designed to foster reflection on the challenges faced by these communities and their critical role in preserving their identities and safeguarding their surroundings.
